Varicose Veins Q&A
What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins that develop below the surface of your skin, usually on your legs. These veins may appear blue or dark purple and can become large enough to bulge out from under your skin.
The root cause of varicose veins is valve dysfunction. In healthy veins, small valves keep blood flowing in one direction. When the valve isn’t working properly, it can allow blood to flow backwards and pool inside the vein, which causes the enlargement.
Varicose veins are common in the legs because blood must fight gravity to make it back to your heart. Your risk for developing the twisted, bulging veins increases as you age and because of:
- Family history
If you stand or sit for long periods of time, you may also be at a higher risk for developing varicose veins.
When should I seek treatment for varicose veins?
Some people seek varicose vein treatment for cosmetic reasons because of how the enlarged, dark-colored veins make their legs look.
You should schedule a varicose vein evaluation at One Vein Clinic if you’re unhappy with the appearance of your leg or if your varicose veins cause symptoms like:
- Leg pain
- Leg swelling
- Burning or throbbing sensations
- Muscle cramps
- Skin discoloration
Complications from varicose veins are rare but, if left untreated, some enlarged veins can cause ulcers, bleeding, and blood clots.
Dr. Farha offers comprehensive vein evaluations to determine which varicose vein treatment is right for you. He customizes a treatment plan to treat the damaged veins and improve blood circulation throughout your legs.
How are varicose veins treated?
One Vein Clinic offers several minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, Dr. Farha may recommend:
Sclerotherapy involves injections of a chemical solution into damaged veins. The chemical irritates the vein and ultimately causes it to collapse.
Dr. Farha uses Varithena, a microfoam agent to collapse varicose veins. Treatment is minimally invasive and requires no downtime.
VenaSeal involves injections of a medical adhesive to permanently close off damaged veins. Blood reroutes to nearby, healthy veins to improve blood circulation.
Vein stripping surgery
Vein stripping involves removing damaged veins through small incisions in the legs.
Dr. Farha can suggest diet and lifestyle changes to lower your risk for additional varicose veins. You may also benefit from wearing compression socks and elevating your legs when resting to enhance the blood circulation in your legs.
